Veterinary Acupuncture

Essex Animal Hospital offers acupuncture treatments for dogs and cats. Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese technique of inserting needles in specific points around the body that have positive effects on the nervous system. Veterinary acupuncture is a safe treatment that works with traditional veterinary medicine to help heal various health conditions. Its primary use in rehabilitation therapy is for pain management or stimulation of the nervous system.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Sterile acupuncture needles are inserted into acupuncture points, which are groups of nerve tissue and blood vessels. Stimulating a nerve at an acupuncture point will stimulate the nerve fibers, inducing reactions release chemical substances that can work to repair damaged tissue.

The goal of veterinary acupuncture is to correct imbalances by enhancing the circulation of blood throughout the body and stimulating the nervous system. Veterinary acupuncture also releases pain relieving hormones such as serotonin that greatly reduces pain in your pet.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Treat?

Veterinary acupuncture can help treat many health conditions your pet may be experiencing including chronic and acute conditions, and is used for pain management in treating:

  • Disc disease
  • Arthritis
  • Post-surgery
  • To help stimulate the nerve fibers in cases of paralysis
  • The vast majority of our acupuncture patients enjoy their treatment; in fact, many of them are relaxed and some even fall asleep! The treatments are generally between 20-30 minutes and improvement is commonly seen within six sessions of treatment.
